Skype for Android – Now with Video

Skype recently announced that it’s updated Android application supports video calling on select devices.  The app also sports a new UI – with new menu, profile access, and much more.

The app requires Android 2.3 or higher and a front facing camera for video chat.  In addition, only the Sony Ericsson Xperia and the Google Nexus S are supported video chat devices at this time.  Additional support is expected for more devices in the future.

Real-time Translation for Android Translate App

Google announced a new version of their Translate app last week for Android devices.  The most notable change – real-time speech translation.  The new conversation mode will enable users to quickly translate speech in a foreign language into their language.  To reply, users can speak their response in their own language and the app will translate and play the message in the foreign language.

Verizon Unveils Ten 4G LTE Devices at CES

At Verizon‘s press conference yesterday, they announced 10 upcoming devices built for their 4G LTE network.  The list of devices included smartphones, laptops, hotspots, and tablets.  Here is a list of all the new devices:

HTC Thunderbolt
LG Revolution
DROID Bionic
Samsung Smartphone (no name)
Motorola Xoom tablet
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Novatel MiFi hotspot
Samsung 4G LTE hotspot
Compaq CQ10-688nr

Nexus One Gingerbread Update Coming Soon…

Google announced that the Nexus One will receive an update to Gingerbread (Android 2.3) in the next couple of weeks.  The update will be delivered OTA, and will provide users with an alert and instructions on how to complete the update process.  No timeline has been given on how long it will take to deliver Android 2.3 to all Nexus One phones, or which areas will receive the batched update first.
