Google officially released an update that enables users to port their own number into their Google Voice account.  To set this up, click on settings, then voice settings.  Follow the number porting instructions on the page and you’re done.

Google Voice for Android Updates

Google released an update to the Android Google Voice app, which gives users access to their Google Voice inbox and settings with new widgets. The widgets bring your “most recent voicemails and text messages to your home screen.”  Users can also edit dialing preference, quickly compose messages, and edit your “Do Not Disturb” settings.  Download the updated app from the Android Market today! Google Voice Opened to the Public

Historically, the only way to utilize Google Voice was to request an invite.  Yesterday, Google updated the Google Voice application – opening it to the public, with no invitation required.

For users who aren’t familiar with the application, it provides an integrated voicemail player in Gmail, is also available as a mobile app, it can be used with an existing phone number, and also has the ability to transcribe your voicemails.

Google Voice Invites for Students

Google Voice Invites for Students

Starting on May 14th, Google will be giving priority to Google Voice invites to students.  To get an invite, visit http://google.com/voice/students and enter a “.edu” email address.  Invites will be sent out within 24 hours of submission, and only one invite will be sent per email address.
