Google recently announced that it is shutting down its Allo service, retiring one of their many chat / messenger app services, citing that the service never received enough traction in the market.
According to Google, Allo will “continue to work through March 2019” and users will be able to export their conversation history until that time. “We’re excited by the progress we’ve made with our communications experience over the past few years, and ready to take what we’ve learned from Allo and put it to work to make Messages even better. And by refocusing on Messages and Duo for consumers and Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet for team collaboration, we’re focused on delivering a simpler and more unified communications experience for all of you.”
The timing of the shutdown also coincides with Google’s continued push for RCS chat, which will be carrier-based in its implementation, and create an iMessage like experience for the Android platform.
