Google announced the release of Voice Actions for Android, a series of commands that allow users to control their mobile device using their voice. Users will be able to “call contacts, listen to music, browse the web, send texts and email, and complete common tasks,” according to Hugo Barra, Google Product Management Director.
Voice actions are currently available to US (English speaking users) and devices running Android 2.2 (Froyo), and will come pre-installed with the new Droid 2 from Motorola and Verizon. Below is a list of the new voice commands this adds to the Android platform.
Speak any of these commands to perform a Voice Action on your phone (via Google):
- send text to [contact] [message]
- listen to [artist/song/album]
- call [business]
- call [contact]
- send email to [contact] [message]
- go to [website]
- note to self [note]
- navigate to [location/business name]
- directions to [location/business name]
- map of [location]
